Berne Münster Porch, Last Jugement

See the Porch

The main door was finished around 1495 and survived the iconoclasm of the Reformation that occurred 30 years later. The last judgment is presented in the tympanum In a brightly colored staging, as customary in the middle ages. The Archangel Michael weights the souls who then are invited to enter in the paradise trough the very narrow gate on the he right side of the judge an on the left side throw by Lucifer (grenn devil) to the eternal agony and tortured by the devils presented in an rather exhibitionistic manner.
In the archivolts, angels, prophets and the twelve apostles, as well as the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist assist on the evets und the supreme the Judge Jesus . 294 persons participate on the performance.
On the lower part the wise and the foolish virgins stay on the right and left side of the statue of Justice (placed here instead of the Holy Virgin) 294 participants are involved in this performance.
The statues in the niches are copies that have been recast according to the originals in the Historical Museum in Bern.
The portal is also a good example of the colored scenes on mediaeval churches, whose colors have mostly disappeared by the restorations, as for example on the Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris.

To see the monument Auguste Comte

The monument to Auguste Comte (1798-1875) was inaugurated in 1878 on the place de la Sorbonne as a tribute to the founder of positivism, a philosophy favouring the scientific knowledge rather than metaphysics. In the middle, the bust of the philosopher; on the left, Clotilde de Vaux as “Madonna and child”; and on the right, the proletarian trying to learn. On this monument, which seems to be put aside and even at a reduced price in this period of sales, a tag stands out. Its author could be the grateful proletarian...: « À AUGUSTE COMTE MERCI POUR TOUT »! (To Auguste Comte thank you for everything)!

Paris, Horloge du Palais

Pour voir l’horloge

The clock was commissioned by King Charles V in 1371 to give the city of Paris official time, until then given by the bells of the churches often poorly coordinated... Over the centuries, it was restored and transformed several times and then it eventually stopped. Recently restored as it appeared in the 17th century, it was equipped with a State of the art movement: electric radio-synchronized on France Inter. Since then, she gives Paris the official time!
